Life in Carmel
In 1956, Doris was working on location for the film, Julie, in Carmel, California. She did not like a lot of things about the film (it reminded her too much of her abusive first marriage). However, she fell in love with the beauty of the area.
It was quite a few years later in the mid 1970’s that Doris and then husband Barry Comden purchased acreage overlooking the Quail Lodge and Golf Course. Over a three year period, Doris built her dream house. Doris left Beverly Hills and moved there in late 1981.
Doris was now divorced. She focused on enjoying her life and home in Carmel, overlooking the golf course and the Pacific Ocean in the distance. The estate is secluded by tall oak trees, manicured lawns and gardens, and a security fence complete with gatehouse and gatekeeper. The property (11 acres) also includes several redwood cottages, separate from the main house. Inside the main house are country antiques, china, crystal and silver, overstuffed chairs and sofas. Huge rock fireplaces give the house a warm feel. The house also contains the spiral staircase from the The Doris Day Show.
Through the years, Doris has been seen strolling the beach with a few of her pets or stopping to greet people at the Cypress Inn, of which she is part owner, or even in her favorite haunt, the local supermarket. At the Cypress Inn, much of her movie memorabilia decorates the walls, and there is even a lounge dedicated to her son, “Terry’s Lounge”. Of course, the hotel is especially noted for being pet friendly. The hotel has 44 extremely comfortable rooms on two floors, not far from the heart of Carmel. Fans who migrate to the Carmel area to celebrate Doris’s birthday each April 3 can often be seen on the golf course of the Quail Lodge. In the distance is the balcony of Doris’s home, where she sometimes waves at them on their excursions.
Doris spends her time caring for her pets, her home and overseeing her animal foundation. She also answers fan mail. Doris still receives hundreds of letters each month. She is by no means the recluse the tabloids make her out to be. As Doris says "maybe if no one buys their paper, they will go out of business." One can only hope.

1987 Doris Day Convention
In 1987, Miss Day graciously gave fans, who had traveled from the United States and England, her presence for the entire day at the Doris Day Convention, in Carmel, California. The event was organized by Mike Doyle, president of the then Doris Day Collectors Club and Joe Niagara, long-time friend to Doris and popular DJ at WIBG in Philadelphia. Sound was recorded by the late Don Chang, known to Doris for his extensive record collection and knowledge of her recording career. Miss Day spoke for 90 minutes and questions were taken. She then posed for photos taken with each fan, who then presented her with a gift. Miss Day accepted a generous check for her animal foundation from the group.
